TV.com’s Favorite SciFi Shows – with DVD links

This is a list from TV.com – it’s their Favorite TV Sci-Fi Shows (by viewer popularity). Their Best of 2007 in the Sci-Fi genre was Supernatural, at 37% with 13.7 million votes, followed by The 4400, with 12.6 million (34%), Stargate: Atlantis, 6.7 million (18%), and the editor’s pick, Battlestar Galactica took in 3.4 million (9%). Interestingly, they placed both Heroes and Lost in the drama category, which I think is a mistake – Heroes is much more Sci-Fi, and until we know the end of Lost, I’d say it had some Sci-Fi elements, or at least supernatural, which falls under this genre. Heroes was the Top Show of 2007 (of all genres), with 5.2 million votes. Note the discrepancy in the number of voters voting for the Best Show, versus those voting for the Best Sci-Fi show. Sci-Fi voters are the most rabid fans, with almost 3 times the number of votes going to it’s top pick, as to the Top Show. So we are die-hard fans to the end. Now save those $$, because you’ll be sure to find some DVDs you can’t live without listed here – and just wait until I get to the little known shows!

The rating system is one that any viewer can use – they have a slide bar, which allows you to choose a “level” you think suits that shows, and they show the stats for it, with total viewer participation, percentage per ranking, and a nice pie chart, etc. Their ranking goes as follows:

10 = Perfection

9 = Superb

8 = Great

7 = Good

and 6 = Fair, 5 = Mediocre, 4 = Poor, 3 = Bad, and below = Abysmal (I couldn’t find any SF shows that scored below 4+). So if a show received a 9.2, it means that was their overall percentage; some scored it higher, some lower – this was the average percentage rating. Dates of the shows are given, and a dash is simply left at the end if the show is still ongoing. Some favorites you may see missing, but remember, this is the rating of the people who bothered to vote – some shows had tons of votes, others much less – so if a show received much fewer votes, a very high or low score by some could influence the rankings. This is only one site’s basis, but it is less arbitrary perhaps than using Entertainment Weekly’s Top 25 Sci-Fi, which are editor’s picks, and represent what they feel are iconic shows that have left a lasting impression on the genre and influenced it in some way. That list will be forthcoming soon.

Supernatural 2005- 9.2

Supernatural

Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as Dean and Sam Winchester, two brothers who travel the country looking for their missing father and battling evil spirits along the way.

Sam Winchester is a college student bound for law school, determined to escape his family’s past – unlike his older brother, Dean. Ever since they were little their father has been consumed with an obsession to find the evil forces that murdered his beloved wife, and recruited his two young sons to help them. They have grown up as hunters of the supernatural. Sam escaped this way of life after high school, and now has a happy life with his girlfriend, Jessica, and a promising future career. Dean, however, stayed behind with his father to join him in his ‘hunting.'”

Stargate Atlantis

” A secret group of scientists have discovered the location of the famous lost city of Atlantis, but it’s not on Earth. It’s located in another galaxy altogether, the Pegasus galaxy. Stargate Atlantis, a spin-off from the highly successful Stargate SG-1 series, follows a multinational scientific and military group, lead by Diplomat Dr. Elizabeth Weir (played by actress Torri Higginson), headed on a one way trip to Atlantis. Their mission: to investigate the secrets of Atlantis, a city now known to have been built by ancient powerful beings, and bring whatever they discover back to Earth. They will be all on their own, with no means to return, with no means of rescue or support, unless they can find the technology they need in Atlantis to return them to Earth.”

Battlestar Galactica (2003)

Battlestar Galactica (2003)

“The Best Show on Television in 2005? Yes, according to Time Magazine, Rolling Stone and New York Newsday. Praised by The New York Times, The National Review, The New Yorker, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Chicago Tribune and many other publications, Battlestar Galactica won a prestigious Peabody Award in the spring of 2006.

Ronald D. Moore, the producer of Carnivale and writer for Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, boldly re-imagined the original 1978 space opera of humans versus the robotic Cylons. He teamed up with co-executive producer David Eick on a powerful and dramatic update of the Galactica story.

Gone are the technobabble, disco outfits and Egyptian helmets of the original series. The modern show introduces new elements to the Galactica story. The Cylons have developed human-form models that are indistinguishable from real humans. The Cylons have a monotheistic religion in contrast to the polytheistic religion of the human Colonies.

In the miniseries, the Cylons launch a massive attack against the humans and wipe out the Twelve Colonies, sending the 47,000 survivors on a desperate search for the fabled 13th colony–Earth.”
